Abiud Simuyu (pictured), aged 50 years, is a committed farmer at Bumula, in Bungoma County. Kenya. He farms vegetables and maize and he enjoys listening to local Luo music whenever he is free. Simiyu joined OAF in 2018 and since then he has been a loyal member where he acquires farm inputs on credit and repays without fail.
Simiyu was married to his dear wife Irene Nekesa, although in October 2021 Nekesa became sick and visited a local clinic for check≠up. She later visited Bungoma district hospital where she was diagnosed with Fibroids. Nekesa was advised to undergo an operation to allow her complete relief. Unfortunately as Nekesa was going through the procedure, she succumbed and lost her life on 24th October 2021 leaving behind five children.
One Acre Fund, in partnership with MIC Global, provides the farmers with a funeral insurance where a farmer plus one family member is compensated with Kshs. 20,000 after their demise. Abiud reported the claim to MIC Global through the OAF field officer and within a few days, a cash benefit of Kshs. 20,000 was paid to him through his mobile line as a funeral benefit for his wife.
Abiud Simiyu urges all farmers to form groups and join OAF and they will be empowered. He is happy that One Acre Fund is a caring company and he felt warmly condoled when he received his cash benefit for the loss of his dear wife.
“I was very excited to receive the benefit. At first, I was not sure if I will get compensated since I have never had insurance before neither was I aware of anyone who benefited. I was able to clear my children school fees, bought farm inputs and food stuff for my family, I was very grateful.
